This page explains what data we store when we provide the WhatsApp API to a business, and how to request its deletion.
When a business uses our WhatsApp API to communicate with you, we store: messages sent and received, media files received, contacts' phone numbers, and usage logs (message counts, dates). This data lives in a database dedicated to the WhatsApp API, separate from the database where we keep data for customers who contract directly with Automate AI.
In most cases, the business that contacted you on WhatsApp is using our service — not Automate AI directly. Under data protection law, that business is the 'data controller' for your data: it decides why it communicates with you and what it uses that information for. Automate AI acts as a 'data processor' — we provide the technical infrastructure, but we don't decide how the data is used.
That doesn't mean we ignore your request. As soon as we receive it, we forward it immediately to the responsible business, which is obligated to act on it. We log the request and follow up until we have confirmation the data has been deleted. If we can't identify the business involved, we'll contact you to clarify before proceeding.
We confirm receipt of your request within 5 business days, and follow up until the data is actually deleted or until we respond explaining why deletion wasn't possible (e.g. a legal retention obligation).
